A HELPING HAND FROM IWCKL TO SPASTIC CENTRE’S NEW CAFETERIA
Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur

‘Sometimes real superheroes live in the hearts of children fighting big battles.’ And to give them a helping hand can be such an uplifting experience.
On 20 May, 12 members of the Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur (IWCKL) found out just that, when they were invited to the Launching Ceremony of Sunshine Cafeteria at the Spastic Children’s Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (SCASFT) in Petaling Jaya.
Established in 1960, SCASFT is a non-profit welfare organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy (CP) through educational and rehabilitation programmes. The Sunshine Cafeteria aims to provide training to adult students to experience working in a food and beverage environment. A self-service outlet and easily accessible to motorists, it is open to the public from Mondays to Fridays, 8am-3pm. Selling simple food and drinks, the students are taught to handle both cash and e-Payments, stock-taking, customer-serving, the washing and cleaning-up.
IWCKL is indeed proud to be part of this admirable set-up. The Club donated a refrigerator, a chiller and a food warmer to get them started. During the launch, as a gesture of appreciation, the students gave a wonderful percussion performance for the invitees and guests, followed by thunderous applause from the audience. It was so inspiring witnessing each student, from many spectrums of CP trying their level best to showcase their talent.
After the plaque presentation, the cafe received its first batch of customers. IWCKL members and everyone present gave such enthusiastic support to all items sold, including some lovely handcrafted bags and cards amongst others. The members later left with the hope that the general public nearby would come and lend support to such a noble effort, and help this little cafe thrive.
Again, this project was successfully implemented with the concerted effort and generosity of all members of IWCKL. Special mention and thanks to Past President (PP) Linda Lim, PP Datin Regina and Tunku Maziah, who also sit on the board of SCASFT for coordinating all efforts so smoothly. To reiterate once more, giving these young heroes a helping hand is truly an uplifting experience. A gesture that should be replicated.
